What’s in a Name?

Hambra is derivative of Alhambra, the 14th century palace of Moorish kings located in Granada, Spain. The sublime structure within a walled city is widely regarded as a masterpiece, and is revered in Islamic culture as an architectural classic and a symbol of paradise on earth.

Moors , as the Spaniards named them, governed Spain from the eighth to the fifteenth century. When they arrived from the south the Iberian Peninsula was backward, much like the rest of Europe. By the beginning of the ninth century, Spain, with Cordova as its capital city, had become the intellectual center of Europe.

Aesthetic religious structures and palaces like Alhambra were created in the thriving, multicultural society. Spain was a tolerant, moral society of artistic, scientific and commercial proportion. Muslims, Christians, and Jews coexisted peacefully for centuries. The archetypal culture helped lift Europe out of the Dark Ages and launch the renaissance. It remains a beacon of hope for a future in which the peoples and religions of the world will learn from each other and live in accord.
